Whitney Eklund announces campaign for Lincoln City Council fall 2024 election
Community volunteer and Planning Commissioner Whitney Eklund announced her campaign for Lincoln City Council, District 5, in the November 2024 election last week.
Eklund grew up in a military family which taught her the value of service and community, a press release from Eklund’s campaign stated.
“When my husband and I chose Lincoln as the place where we would settle down and raise our family, I knew that I had to get involved, seek opportunities to serve the community, and always work to make Lincoln the best place it can be.” Eklund said. “I am running for Lincoln City Council to give back to the community I love and advance solutions that help preserve our uniquely high quality of life.”
Eklund serves as a member of the Lincoln Planning Commission, representing community interests in the planning process for new development. She also serves as a member of the Lincoln City Economic Development Committee, helping develop a comprehensive strategy for attracting new businesses and creating new local jobs.
Ekland also has served as Hospitality Director of the Friends of the Lincoln Library, as a YMCA Project Cornerstone Mentor, and as an Ambassador with the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce. She graduated from Leadership Lincoln’s class of 2022-2023 and was named “2023 Emerging Leader of the Year” by the Chamber. Professionally, she spent 15 years working as a registered dental hygienist.
According to Eklund’s press release, she has already obtained numerous endorsements from elected leaders and community members, including Congressman Kevin Kiley, Assemblyman Joe Patterson, and Lincoln Council members Holly Andreatta, Dan Karleskint, and Ben Brown.
Eklund and her husband, Mark, live in the Twelve Bridges neighborhood of Lincoln. They have two daughters that attend local schools.
Eklund’s released stated she intends to run for the Lincoln City Council, District 5, in November 2024. Karleskint, who has endorsed Eklund’s run, currently holds the District 5 seat.
The Lincoln News Messenger followed up multiple times to get more information about the early announcement of Eklund’s campaign, but all requests went unanswered.
